Puma Fast-R Nitro Elite 3 Review –
“My Fastest Racing Shoe?”
The Puma Fast-R Nitro Elite 3 has become one of the most important race shoes in my rotation. It now holds both my 5K PB and marathon PB, and after racing it again at the British Masters 5K in Battersea Park, I’m convinced it is one of the fastest and most versatile super shoes currently available.
At Battersea, I ran 16:36 for 5K, another personal best, and once again the Fast-R Nitro Elite 3 proved exactly why I keep reaching for it when the big races come around.
Overview
The Fast-R Nitro Elite 3 is a very aggressive race shoe, but unlike some super shoes it works across a huge range of distances.
It has:
Very low weight
A highly responsive nitrogen-infused midsole
Aggressive rocker geometry
A flexible carbon plate
Excellent forefoot propulsion
A wide and relatively stable landing platform
It is not the softest or most forgiving racer, but it is incredibly efficient.
Key Stats
In my UK size 9.5:
Weight: 199g
Heel stack: 40mm
Forefoot stack: 32mm
Drop: 8mm
Midsole: Nitro-infused aliphatic foam
Plate: Flexible carbon PWRPLATE
Fit: Narrow-looking but accommodating
Best use: 5K through marathon
At 199g, it is extremely competitive for a full-stack racing shoe.
It isn’t as absurdly light as something like the ASICS Metaspeed Ray Tokyo, but once you are under 200g, the shoe already feels very light on foot.
Upper – 5/5
The upper is excellent.
It uses a very lightweight, transparent mesh that wraps closely around the foot without feeling restrictive.
Although the shoe looks narrow, the material gives enough to adapt to my wider foot shape.
I get:
Excellent lockdown
No heel slippage
No toe rubbing
Good breathability
Very little unnecessary structure
The tongue is probably the weakest part. It is extremely thin and flimsy, and Puma could give it slightly more structure to help with tightening the laces.
But in actual racing, that has never caused me a problem.
Upper score: 5/5.
Midsole – 5/5
The midsole is the reason this shoe is so special.
The nitrogen-infused foam provides excellent energy return without feeling excessively soft or unstable.
You get a very quick:
compression → decompression → plate engagement → forward propulsion
The geometry is also extremely aggressive.
When racing a 5K, I land right towards the front of the shoe, engage the exposed lip of the plate and get a noticeable snap forward.
That plate extension is not a gimmick.
You can actually feel it working.
The rocker then combines with that plate engagement to roll you quickly through your stride.
The result is a shoe that feels incredibly efficient.
This is probably the best midsole setup of any race shoe I own.
Midsole score: 5/5.
Outsole – 4/5
Grip is very good.
There is plenty of rubber beneath the main forefoot landing area and the platform provides a good amount of confidence at race pace.
The problem is durability.
My pair is already showing:
Dents
Rubber wear
Small areas beginning to tear
Increasing signs of outsole degradation
There is also a large exposed section around the plate.
That means this is absolutely a road-only racing shoe.
Avoid gravel, stones and rough surfaces.
Landing on a stone in the exposed section feels horrible and risks damaging the plate or surrounding foam.
So the performance is good, but Puma could have made the outsole more robust.
Outsole score: 4/5.
Stability – 4.5/5
For such an aggressive super shoe, the Fast-R Nitro Elite 3 is surprisingly stable.
There isn’t much stability structure in the upper, but the forefoot platform is wide and gives you a substantial landing area.
There is also some sole flare and enough structure through the rear of the upper to keep the foot centred.
I find it noticeably more stable than shoes such as the ASICS Metaspeed Ray Tokyo and potentially even the Metaspeed Sky Tokyo.
That gives it another advantage as the distance increases.
Stability score: 4.5/5.
Speed – 5/5
This is the fastest shoe I own.
The evidence is difficult to argue with.
It now has my:
5K PB
Marathon PB
One of my fastest half marathon performances
My first half marathon race win
At the British Masters 5K, I ran 16:36.
The previous week, I had run 17:51 at Oak Hill in the Metaspeed Ray Tokyo.
Those are very different courses and circumstances, so it isn't a controlled comparison, but the difference in sensation was obvious.
In the Fast-R, I could open my stride, get aggressively onto the forefoot, load the plate and feel the shoe snapping me forward.
The compression and rebound are quicker than in softer super shoes.
For pure speed:
Speed score: 5/5.
Durability – 3/5
This is the biggest concern.
The midsole still feels excellent and continues to return energy well.
The outsole is what worries me.
The wear and dents are getting progressively worse, and I suspect I may need to replace this pair somewhere around the 300-mile mark.
For a premium-priced racing shoe, that isn’t particularly impressive.
I would therefore save it primarily for:
Races
Important race-pace workouts
Occasional key sessions
rather than wasting mileage on everyday training.
Durability score: 3/5.
5K Performance
This may be my favourite 5K shoe.
The combination of:
Low weight
Aggressive rocker
Forefoot plate extension
Quick rebound
Relatively stable platform
makes it exceptionally effective over shorter distances.
At Battersea, everything came together.
I had no working pace information from my watch and essentially raced by feel.
That may actually have helped.
Instead of worrying about splits, I focused on the runners around me and simply raced.
The result was 16:36 — a new PB.
10K
The shoe works brilliantly over 10K as well.
It is aggressive enough for sustained high-speed running but has enough cushioning to remain usable once the distance starts increasing.
I would have absolutely no hesitation choosing it for a fast road 10K.
Half Marathon
The Fast-R also works very well over the half marathon.
I have already raced strongly in it over this distance and won my first ever half marathon wearing it.
The only consideration is comfort.
It is not the softest or most forgiving shoe.
If you prefer plush cushioning, there are more comfortable choices.
But if performance is the priority, it is extremely effective.
Marathon
This is where the versatility becomes particularly impressive.
I have already run a marathon PB in the Fast-R Nitro Elite 3.
It maintains its efficiency extremely well over 26.2 miles.
The downside is that because the ride is relatively firm and aggressive, my feet were definitely feeling it towards the end of the marathon.
So there is a trade-off:
Efficiency and speed versus outright comfort.
If I absolutely had to chase a marathon time, though, this would still be one of the first shoes I would consider.
Who Is It Good For?
The Fast-R Nitro Elite 3 is unusual because it suits such a broad range of race distances.
Mile – Excellent
The low weight and aggressive forefoot propulsion should work brilliantly.
5K – Outstanding
Probably its best distance for me.
10K – Outstanding
Fast, efficient and easy to keep turning over.
Half Marathon – Excellent
Enough cushioning with outstanding propulsion.
Marathon – Excellent
A proven marathon PB shoe, although some runners may want more comfort.
Running Style
This shoe works best when you actively engage it.
If you:
Land midfoot or forefoot
Put force into the ground
Open your stride as you accelerate
Like aggressive rocker geometry
Enjoy feeling a carbon plate working
then the Fast-R Nitro Elite 3 should suit you extremely well.
It is less about huge soft bounce and more about efficient forward propulsion.
Value – 3/5
The retail price is around £260, and that is one of the shoe’s biggest weaknesses.
I think Puma pushed the price too far.
At around £220–£230, it would be much easier to recommend.
At £260, especially given my concerns around outsole durability, it is expensive even by modern super-shoe standards.
The performance is absolutely top tier.
The value is not.
Value score: 3/5.
British Masters 5K Race Performance
The British Masters 5K at Battersea Park was a perfect test.
It was an extremely competitive field featuring some of the fastest masters runners in Britain.
I went into the race without much recent speed work and wasn't sure where my 5K fitness was.
I also had to run without proper live pace data because of problems with my watch.
But the Fast-R felt superb.
I settled into the race, used the runners around me and committed to the pace.
The result:
16:36 PB.
That makes it the second time I've gone under 17 minutes in this shoe, and reinforces why it is currently my first choice when I want to race a fast 5K.
Final Thoughts
The Puma Fast-R Nitro Elite 3 is probably the best all-round racing shoe I own.
It is not necessarily the most comfortable.
It is not the most durable.
And it certainly isn't cheap.
But when the priority is going fast, it delivers.
The combination of the nitrogen-infused foam, aggressive geometry and flexible PWRPLATE is exceptional.
It gives me a quicker rebound than many softer racers and a much more noticeable sense of forward propulsion.
Most importantly, it works across almost every race distance.
From a mile to 5K, 10K, half marathon and full marathon, this shoe can genuinely do all of it.
And for me, the results speak for themselves.
5K PB: 16:36.
Marathon PB shoe.
First half marathon win.
When the big race comes around, this is one of the first shoes I reach for.
